Cobblers do a lot more than resoles. Here are the jobs North Georgia shops on this site say they do, and what each one means.
Common repairs
- Heel replacement or heel tips: replacing the worn heel or just its top layer. It's often the cheapest way to keep a shoe going. Red Wing, for example, offers heel replacement on its own as a separate service. (Red Wing repair FAQ)
- Half sole or full resole: replacing the front part of the sole or the whole sole. On a welted boot, a full resole usually means cutting the old stitch, replacing worn cork filler and sewing on a new sole. (Stridewise resole walkthrough)
- Stitching repair: re-sewing seams that have come apart. Whether it can be done depends on where the damage is and how good the leather is. (Red Wing repair FAQ)
- Hooks, eyelets and zippers: replacing broken lacing hardware or zippers on boots, bags and jackets. Several shops here list zipper work, for example The Leatherman (Cumming).
- Cleaning, conditioning and dye work: reconditioning dried-out leather or changing its color. (The Leatherman, Red Wing repair FAQ)
- Orthopedic modifications: some shops build up or change shoes for medical needs. NuShoe quotes these case by case. Locally, reviews of Groover's in Rome mention this kind of work. (NuShoe FAQ, Rome listings)
- Leather goods: many cobblers also fix purses, belts, holsters and saddles. Check each listing's services.
Questions to ask before you leave your shoes
- Can these be resoled, and how? Ask whether the shop can tell if they're welted, Blake-stitched or glued. (See resole or replace?)
- What sole will you use? Ask whether it's original, leather, rubber or a specific brand, and whether you can choose.
- What will it cost, and will you call me first if the price changes once you start?
- When will they be ready? Turnaround depends on how busy the shop is. One shop's reviews mention waits of months, while others are same-day, so ask.
- Do you need a deposit, and what payment do you take? Some shops are cash only. Our Dahlonega listing is one.
- What if the repair doesn't hold? Ask about the shop's warranty or redo policy. NuShoe, for example, states a one-year warranty on its repair work. (NuShoe FAQ)
- Can I see examples of similar work?
Small things that help
- Bring the shoes clean, and take out insoles or orthotics you want back.
- Cedar shoe trees help leather shoes dry in shape and absorb moisture. (NuShoe FAQ)
